Largest Beach Towel

On 1 June 2008, the world’s largest beach towel was laid on the beautiful beach at Fig Tree Bay in Protaras, Cyprus, to celebrate and welcome the beginning of the summer season!

The beach towel measured 64.20 m (210 ft 8 in) x 31 m (101 ft 9 in) and was made of pure cotton thread. It took over 100 people to put the towel together as it covered 1900 m² (20451 f² 50 in²) area, which was large enough to cover the entire sandy beach area of Fig Tree Bay and gave the opportunity to the participants to enjoy the sun!

Aeolos Travel, the company who organised the event, invited DJ’s, singers and traditional dancers to join the celebrations and entertain the crowds throughout the event which attracted thousands of people and lasted until the late evening.

In the award ceremony a Guinness World Records certificate was given to the Mayor of Paralimni Mr. Andreas Evangelou and the president of Aeolos Travel & Bookcyprus.com Mr. Sotos Stephanou by Guinness World Records representative Ms. Tzeni Karampoiki who certified and congratulated them in their achievement.

The beach towel will be cut into small pieces and will be sent to everyone who took part in this project, as well as the participants who registered their details to own a piece of the largest beach towel a great achievement by Cyprus!
